Awake or Asleep? (2010)

The moments after we wake are confusing. It is in these moments that the lines between dreams and reality are blurred. Unlike the transition from wakefulness to sleeping, the state of consciousness leading out of sleep is cluttered with strange emotions and memories that lose their intensity shortly after waking.

In Awake or Asleep? (2010) I explore the journeys from wakefulness to sleeping and from dreaming to waking. As long as I can remember I have experienced vivid and lucid dreams and find it fascinating that every individual experiences sleep and dreaming differently.

Awake of Asleep? is a series of three pamphlet books. Book I includes a series of clack and white, still-life photographs. Book II is an erasure poem created from the Puffin Classics, 1967 edition of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. Book III is a series of digitally manipulated photos from my family archive.
